“The Kingdom began years ago to prioritize the development of its agricultural sector by providing financial support, discovering new types of crops and integrating advanced technologies in the sector. These steps led to a quadrupling of local food production between 1980 and 1990, which is a huge success”, Al Al-Sheikh further explained, “The government has now been able, through research and development initiatives, to help farmers double their production without fear of scarce water sources. As part of its efforts to achieve the vision, the leadership approved a project that is worth 24.5 billion S.R to develop and improve the agriculture, water and environment sectors in the Kingdom in accordance with international standards”.

Under the strategic direction highlighted in Saudi Vision 2030, protection of the nation’s vital resources is imperative to the creation of an ambitious and effectively governed nation.

To support this vision, Saudi Arabia has been prioritizing the development of sufficient food reserves, promotion of aquaculture and partnering with countries that have abundant natural resources.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations has also partnered with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Saudi Grain Authority and Agricultural Development Fund to augment national capacities for guaranteeing sustainable food security.

Under this venture, the entities aim to establish an evidence-based food loss and waste reduction programmed and implement a food security early warning system. Moreover, significant strides have been made in the domain of aquaculture owing to an increase in marine fisheries and overall productivity which is expected to augment the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
